    In Instagram, open Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information → Download or transfer information, and select:

    • Some of your information
    • Followers and following
    • Format: JSON
    • Date range: All time

    Instagram usually needs a few minutes, sometimes a few hours. Then download the ZIP from the link in the email.

Only the account names are stored, in this browser. That's how the next analysis can show who unfollowed you.

What "not following back" means

An account doesn't follow you back when you follow it, but it isn't among your followers. The tool finds these accounts by comparing the two lists in your export, following.json and followers_1.json, and matching them by username. The result opens on the Don't follow you back tab.

That list answers a different question than "who unfollowed me". Some accounts on it never followed you in the first place:

  • Brands, creators and public figures you follow for their posts. A one-way follow is normal here.
  • People you followed first who didn't follow back, or haven't noticed yet.
  • Accounts that did unfollow you at some point. One export can't tell them apart from the two groups above.
  • Deactivated or temporarily unavailable accounts. They can drop out of your followers file while they're switched off.

To see who actually unfollowed you, you need two exports from different dates. The Instagram unfollowers tracker on the home page explains how the before-and-after comparison works; this page uses the same tool.

How to check who doesn't follow you back

  1. Request your data. Open Your information and permissions in Accounts Center, then Export your information → Create export → Export to device. Choose only Followers and following, Date range: All time and Format: JSON.
  2. Download the ZIP once Instagram says it's ready. According to Instagram, it stays under Available downloads for 4 days.
  3. Select the ZIP above. No need to unzip it. The "Don't follow you back" list appears first, with a count.

Only want to check one person? You don't need an export for that. Open their profile, tap Following and search for your username. If you're not in their list, they don't follow you. This works for public accounts and for private accounts you follow.

How to go through the list

A long list is easier to handle with a plan. The tools on the tab help with each step:

  • Sort by oldest. The date is when you followed the account. Someone you followed years ago who still doesn't follow you back is unlikely to start now.
  • Sort by newest to spot people you followed recently. They may simply not have noticed yet.
  • Search for a name when you want to check a particular account.
  • Download the CSV to mark accounts as "keep" or "unfollow" in a spreadsheet before you change anything on Instagram.

Accounts you follow for their content (news, brands, artists) usually belong on the "keep" side. Suspicious accounts are covered in how to spot fake and bot followers.

How to unfollow without getting limited

The tool can't unfollow anyone: it only reads your export. You unfollow in the Instagram app, one account at a time. A few habits keep that uneventful:

  • Go slowly. Instagram doesn't publish an unfollow limit. Unfollowing many accounts in a short time can make it temporarily restrict what you can do. Work in small batches and spread a big cleanup over several days.
  • Stop when Instagram pushes back. If you see a "Try again later" message or a notice that an action was limited, pause and continue another day instead of retrying right away.
  • Don't hand your password to a mass-unfollow app. Such apps have to log in as you, which goes against Instagram's Terms of Use and puts your account at risk. More in tracker apps vs. data export and are Instagram follower apps safe?
  • Consider muting instead. If you want fewer posts from someone without unfollowing, mute their posts or stories from their profile. They aren't notified.

Unfollowing a private account removes your access to its posts. To follow it again you have to send a new request, which the owner has to accept.

Check again later

Keep Remember this result on this device switched on. When you open a newer export in the same browser, the tool also shows Unfollowed you and New followers since the last time. The saved result contains only account names and stays in your browser; Delete saved history removes it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see who doesn't follow me back on Instagram?

Request your followers and following from Instagram as a JSON export (Accounts Center, Export your information, Followers and following, All time, JSON). When the ZIP is ready, select it on this page. The "Don't follow you back" tab opens first (after a later comparison, new unfollowers come first) and lists every account you follow that isn't among your followers.

Is it free, and do I need to log in?

It's free and there is no login. You never enter your Instagram password here. Instagram may ask for it on its own page when you request the export.

Does someone on the list know that I checked or unfollowed them?

Checking is private: the tool doesn't connect to Instagram. Instagram also doesn't send a notification when you unfollow someone, though they may notice it later in their own followers list.

Does "doesn't follow you back" mean they unfollowed me?

Not necessarily. Many of these accounts never followed you, for example brands, creators or people you followed first. To see who actually unfollowed you, analyze a newer export later in the same browser and open the "Unfollowed you" tab.

Why is someone who follows me on the list?

Usually the export's date range wasn't set to All time, the person followed you after the export was created, or their account was deactivated or temporarily unavailable at that moment. Request a fresh export with All time and check again.

How many accounts can I unfollow per day?

Instagram doesn't publish a number. If you unfollow many accounts in a short time, Instagram may temporarily limit what you can do. Unfollow by hand, in small batches spread over several days, and stop for a while if you see a "Try again later" message.
