Who Unfriended Me on Facebook?

Facebook doesn't tell you who removed you as a friend. Your data export shows your friends and followers at one moment; analyze a newer export here later and the tool lists who is no longer your friend. No login: the ZIP is read in this browser tab and never uploaded.

No ZIP yet? How to get it

Your file never leaves this device

No ZIP yet? Three steps

  1. Request your data from Facebook

Open Facebook's download page (opens in a new tab)
    Which options do I pick?

On Facebook, open Settings & privacy → Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Export your information → Create export → your Facebook profile, and select:

    • Export to device
    • Friends and followers
    • Format: JSON
    • Date range: All time
  2. Wait for the email

Facebook usually needs a few minutes to a few hours. Then download the ZIP from the link in the email.

  3. Upload the ZIP here

We read your friends, friend requests, followers and following files. Facebook's export only contains names, so results can't link to profiles.

History on this device

Only the account names are stored, in this browser. That's how the next analysis can show who unfollowed you.

How it works

  1. Request your data from Facebook. Open Settings & privacy → Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Export your information → Create export. Meta is gradually renaming Accounts Center to Meta Account, so you may see that name instead. Pick your Facebook profile and Export to device. Under Customize information select only Friends and followers, set Date range to All time and Format to JSON, then start the export. Facebook asks for your password on its own page, never here.
  2. Wait, then download the ZIP. Facebook doesn't publish a processing time. A small friends-and-followers export is often ready within minutes to a few hours. You get an email and a Facebook notification when it's done. Download it under Available downloads within 4 days.
  3. Select the ZIP above. Don't rename it. If your browser unzipped it (Safari on a Mac does this by default), drag the whole folder onto the upload box. The tool reads the friends, removed friends, friend request, followers and following files and shows the lists right here.

The guide on how to download your Facebook friends list covers the menus on iPhone, Android and desktop. The tutorial has a short version. To see what the results look like first, use Try with sample data: the names are made up.

What your Facebook export contains

Facebook's export lists people by display name only. It has no usernames, profile IDs or profile links, so the results show names and can't link to profiles.

Each list below appears only if your export contains the files it's built from. Every list has a count, search, sorting and a CSV download.

Who unfriended me? Compare two exports

Facebook doesn't notify you when someone unfriends you, and no file in the export lists the people who removed you. The Removed friends file is the opposite: it lists the people you removed.

What works is a before-and-after comparison:

  1. Analyze an export now with Remember this result on this device switched on (it is on by default). The tool saves the names from your friends, followers and following lists in this browser's storage (IndexedDB). It also keeps your own username or profile ID, if the export or its file name contains one, to match later exports to the same account. Nothing else from the export is kept.
  2. Some weeks later, request a new export with the same settings and analyze it in the same browser.
  3. Open the No longer friends tab. It lists everyone who was in your friends list last time and isn't in the new one. New friends shows the reverse.

A name under No longer friends means the friendship ended without you removing them: they unfriended you, one of you blocked the other, or their account was deactivated or deleted. The export doesn't say which. Names that appear in your own Removed friends list are left out, because you ended those friendships yourself. Check the profile on Facebook before drawing conclusions: a deactivated account can come back.

  • The comparison only covers the time between two exports. Nothing before your first saved analysis can be recovered.
  • Names are the only identifier. Someone who changed their name appears once under No longer friends and once under New friends.
  • Keep the file names Facebook gives the ZIPs. The tool can use them to recognize that two exports belong to the same account.
  • If the old and new lists have almost no names in common, the tool assumes they come from different accounts and shows no comparison.
  • The saved lists stay in this browser on this device and are never sent to us. A private window, clearing site data, or switching browser or device starts over. Delete saved history removes them.
  • If your exports contain no friends list, the tool compares your followers instead.

"Don't follow you back" on Facebook

Friends on Facebook follow each other automatically, but the export's follow files don't list them consistently. When your export includes a friends list, the tool therefore leaves your friends out of Don't follow you back and You don't follow back. What remains are mostly Pages, public figures and people you follow without being friends.

Pages and public figures rarely follow back, so seeing them here is expected. The date shows when you followed them, not when anything changed.

Privacy: what happens to your file

The ZIP is opened by JavaScript in this browser tab. The tool makes no network request with your file or your results and doesn't connect to Facebook, so nobody on your lists is told. If "Remember this result" is on, only the names from your friends, followers and following lists and your own username or profile ID are stored, in this browser. Google Analytics and AdSense load only if you accept cookies; see the privacy policy.

Check it yourself: load this page, switch on airplane mode or disconnect Wi-Fi, then select your ZIP. The analysis still works.

Limitations

  • Not live. Results reflect the moment Facebook created your export. To check again, request a new one.
  • Nothing before your first saved export. The export contains no record of who removed or unfollowed you.
  • Date range matters. If the export wasn't set to All time, older entries can be missing.
  • JSON works best. The tool also reads HTML exports, but it has to pick names and dates out of the page layout, which is less reliable.
  • Keep the export small. A full export with photos and videos takes Facebook longer to prepare and is much larger to download. The tool skips media files, but some older browsers can't open ZIPs over 2 GB. Select only Friends and followers.
  • No actions on your account. The tool can't unfriend or unfollow anyone; you do that yourself on Facebook. The guide on how to unfollow someone on Facebook explains the difference between unfollowing, unfriending, snoozing and taking a break.

Why not an app that logs in to Facebook?

Facebook's developer platform only gives an app the friends who also use that same app. An app that promises your complete friends list, or who deleted you, has to get the data another way, usually by logging in as you or working inside your logged-in browser. Facebook's Terms ask you not to share your password or give others access to your account.

With the export, nothing logs in as you. If you gave your password to such an app, change it and remove the app.

Frequently asked questions

How can I see who unfriended me on Facebook?

Facebook doesn't show a list of people who removed you. Download your Facebook data now and analyze it here with "Remember this result on this device" switched on. Some weeks later, analyze a newer export in the same browser: the "No longer friends" tab lists everyone who was your friend last time and isn't anymore. Each of them unfriended you, blocked you or was blocked by you, or deactivated or deleted their account. The export doesn't say which.

Is there a removed friends list in my Facebook data export?

Yes, but it lists people you removed as friends. It doesn't list people who removed you; Facebook doesn't include that in the export.

Does Facebook notify you when someone unfriends you?

No. Facebook doesn't notify the person you unfriend, and you get no notification when someone unfriends you.

Why don't the results link to Facebook profiles?

Facebook's export only contains display names, with no usernames, profile IDs or links. The tool doesn't guess a profile address from a name, because that would often open the wrong person. Search for the name on Facebook instead.

What's the difference between unfriending and unfollowing on Facebook?

Unfollowing only hides someone's posts from your Feed; you stay friends and they aren't told. Unfriending removes the friendship. Friends follow each other automatically, which is why the two are easy to mix up.

Do I have to give UnfollowTool my Facebook password?

No. You never type your Facebook email or password on this site. Facebook asks for your password on its own page when you download the export. Here you only select the ZIP file.

Should I choose JSON or HTML?

JSON. It contains exact dates and a fixed structure. The tool also reads HTML exports, but it has to pick names and dates out of the page layout, which is less reliable.
